The Doppelganger: Book One - Steve's Chance Read online

  Chapter Nine

He surprisingly got a good night’s sleep. He figured that he’d be on constant guard, considering his doppelganger knew where he lived, but when he hit the bed, he fell asleep. When he awoke, he checked the clock. It was nine. He wanted to leave at least a few hours beforehand so he could get to the front of where the ceremony would be held, but now it would be a struggle.

He ran quickly to Chance, noticing the lack of guards at the gate. The entire town was empty as well. When he went toward the castle, most of the townspeople were gathered around in front of its doors, its gate finally being opened. In an hour, the king would come out of the doors and begin the ceremony. Getting to the front would be difficult, however. The crowd extended to almost the back, and he would have to make his way to the very front. He ran into the crowd, pushing people out of his way. Some casually let him through, and others struggled. A big lady slapped him when he tried to get through her, and Steve just smiled as he continued going through the crowd. Thankfully, no one had freaked out about his bow just yet.

Steve eventually made it to the very front, where people were lining up near the doors. A bunch of guards were against the wall, all armed with pretty powerful steel swords and looking for anyone suspicious. All Steve could do was just play the waiting game now. If anyone jumped in front to attack the king, they’d be his.

The crowd’s ruckus died down when someone came out of the door. It wasn’t the king but instead an old man who said he was his advisor.

“Now then, our new king wants people to quiet down and be on their best behavior. So if you can, wait patiently. He is about to come out and give his speech,” he said. The crowd cheered and then complied with his demands to be quiet. Steve said nothing. He needed to make sure that the king was unharmed, and he kept looking at the roof and around the corners to see if his doppelganger was close by. He wasn’t. No one even said anything about his appearance.

Steve heard the doors crack. The king would be coming out soon, and when he was, he needed to be alert. Then the doors opened, and Steve gasped.

The king was wearing a golden crown, carrying a scepter made from a redstone, had golden robes, and had a ring made from diamond on his finger, but that’s not what startled Steve. The king was young, had Steve’s face, and had his hair. The king was none other than the doppelganger himself. This wasn’t right! Not right at all. He began to get comments from people surrounding him, all saying that he was lucky that the king resembled him. But Steve was too startled to say anything. So this was the surprise the doppelganger had in store. It all made sense.

“He’s so young!” an older person said.

“I think he’s cute,” a teenager girl said.

“Those eyes, they’re like the sun!” a man commented. Steve heard those comments, but all he could do was stare the king with a dumbfounded look. He then shook it off. He had to do something.

“Citizens of Chance, I’m grateful to be elected as king, and I’m not the kind of person who will ramble on, so I’ll make this quick. A change will be coming to Chance. For years, it’s been a place of opportunity, but lately it’s become saturated with more and more people. As ruler, I promise to expand Chance and make it a real kingdom. Soon we’ll form our own country, and then Chance will become a world power.”

Everyone cheered, and all Steve could do was not move. He needed to do something about this, but his legs were like gelatin.

It’s risky, but you have to do something! Steve thought. He decided that he must take his doppelganger out then and there. He drew his bow quickly, and before anyone could react, he fired it toward the king.

The king quickly pulled a diamond sword out of his robes, and Steve jumped to the doors.

“Looks like we have an assassin, and not only that but he’s an imposter too.”

Steve quickly fired another shot, but the king blocked it deftly. This person was unreal. A shot that close should have been unblockable, but his doppelganger swatted it away like it was a dying, fat fly. He smiled as the crowd went crazy, and then he told them to calm down.

“Guards!” the king shouted, and all of them went toward Steve. He had nowhere to go. He couldn’t fight innocent guards, he couldn’t go through the crowd, as they’d rip him to shreds, and he couldn’t go into the castle. The guards grabbed him and quickly put shackles on his arm.

“Take him away! Throw him in the dungeon, and then plan the execution!” the doppelganger said. Steve was dragged off, and he wasn’t even struggling. He had surrendered.
