  Chapter One

  In the town of Hillpeak, a single windmill stood. Being located at a windy hilltop, the citizens of Hillpeak took advantage of the wind, and everything became powered by the windmill instead of by Redstone. It was a great idea, and it saved the citizens energy and money. Or so they thought.

  One day, the wind came to a halt. There was rarely a day where there wasn’t at least some wind, so this made the citizens concerned. But concern soon turned to panic as the days went by and there was no wind. Their power reserves began draining, and the backup redstone generators they did have could only last them for so long. To top it off, the vegetation began dying, the sun rarely showed, and the outside world became infested with mobs. Creepers popped up by the dozen, and some claimed they saw nocturnal monsters during the day, such as skeletons and zombies.

  It was only two weeks since the wind stopped, and the village was on the brink of despair. Their wind-powered electric fence could only last for so long, and no one wanted to venture out to ask for help. When people returned from exploring, they told everyone unbelievable tales. Some claimed there was a dragon flying around, and some spoke of a three-headed snake who was destroying the land. Many villagers were skeptical of their stories, but a few people who told them were known to be honest people.

  At the edge of the fence, a lone boy had enough. His name was Marco, and at eight, he wanted to run around and have fun, not be cooped up in this village.

  “Adults can be such babies,” he uttered to himself, scratching his back with a wooden sword he held. He started feeling anxious. Marco’s parents usually were not strict about him leaving the village to explore, but they told him not to leave because it was dangerous outside.

  “But it can’t be that bad, right?” he said. With none of the villagers looking, he decided to crawl under the fence. It was a tight squeeze, but he managed to get through. He feared the day when he’d be too tall to sneak under there.

  As Marco walked down the hill, he noticed just how rotten the land was. The grass looked wilted, and there were little signs of wildlife to be seen. The air felt stale to breathe, and the sky was dark. What caused this? Was it a strange weather cycle, or was it the end of the world? As Marco thought about this, he saw something at the foot of the hill that made him almost jump. It was a skeleton. Thankfully, Marco saw it first, and he managed to run away from the skeleton’s arrow. However, the pile of bones followed suit, and Marco had to duck and cover to avoid the attacks.

  He didn’t notice the rock in front of him before he tripped over it. As he fell, a zombie, a Creeper, and two more skeletons appeared in front of him. All the mobs surrounded Marco, who began swinging his wooden sword blindly at them. But the mobs weren’t afraid of such a weak weapon, and instead they came closer. Marco closed his eyes, ready to accept his fate.

  When Marco opened them, all the mobs had fallen, and three warriors stood in front of him. Their attacks were so swift that Marco didn’t even hear the three, and yet they had saved his life. One was a man with shaggy brown hair, who wielded an iron sword. Close to him, a woman with red hair stood, and from further away, a blonde-haired man was looking around.

  They all sheathed their weapons and walked to the boy. “What happened?” the brown-haired man asked.

  “I was just exploring, and then I was attacked by five different mobs,” Marco explained.

  “Don’t you know how dangerous it is outside?” the woman told him. “We’ve went through so many weapons, and we have to sleep with one eye open just to survive.”

  Marco nodded. “I thought the grown-ups were just exaggerating. You know how they can be.”

  “They aren’t in this case,” the blonde man added.

  As they walked towards the village, Marco asked, “So who are you three?”

  “I’m Steve,” the brown haired man said.

  “I’m Wendy,” replied the woman.

  “Just call me Bartholomew,” the other man added.

  “What are you three doing outside?” Marco asked as they went to the village’s gate.

  Steve’s face suddenly grimaced. “It’s a long, long story,” he replied.

  “Pretty much, we’re trying to fix the world. There’s a reason why it’s like this right now,” Wendy replied.

  Marco’s eyes suddenly sparkled. “Tell me!” he replied.

  “The Ender Dragon has been awakened, and in a matter of days, it’ll have total control of this world,” Steve told him.

  “A dragon? I thought they were just a legend,” Marco said.

  Bartholomew shook his head. “Not at all, they’re the real deal.”

  Marco’s eyes sparkled again. “That is so cool!”

  Steve just sighed. He didn’t want to tell Marco the whole story, as he didn’t feel like upsetting him. That dragon was his brother, Herobrine. After unknowingly drinking the Ender Dragon’s blood, Herobrine’s body was used as a vessel to give birth to the Ender Dragon. Steve watched his brother turn into the Ender Dragon after confronting him in Chance, the kingdom Steve moved to in hopes to start a better life. After that, Steve was hunted by a member of the Ender Dragon’s cult, Draven. After arriving at Ende, the three were caught in a ritual where Draven sacrificed the souls of Ende’s citizens to give the Ender Dragon full power. The three learned they were the descendants of the heroes who originally defeated the Ender Dragon, and they fought Draven. Draven was defeated, but not before giving the Ender Dragon full power. And now, the earth was becoming barren and scorched.

  As they arrived at the fence, Steve realized that he was slowly losing hope.
