Prologue
The lava seeped over the remains of the sword. It was almost fully melted at this point. The temple was empty. The group had left after they had dropped Herobrine's sword into the lava. He moved forward now, out of the shadows, taking two steps to cross the room and make it to the lava spring. He slid his hand into the lava and pulled out one jewel from the sword that hadn't yet melted. His hand was untouched by the lava. He slid the jewel into a small pouch and left the temple.
Chapter One
"That was a terrible shot."
"'Terrible' seems a little harsh."
"No, it was pretty terrible."
Notch looked over his shoulder to James, who had his arms crossed. "It was almost in the center."
"Right. Almost. Of a non-moving target we painted on a tree."
Notch lowered his bow. "Fine, you do it then."
James picked up his own bow and stepped next to Notch, raised his bow, and fired a clean shot that hit the center of the target directly. "There."
Notch could only shake his head. James had been trying to teach him how to shoot, but he could never seem to shoot as well as James. He figured James had to be a natural. Sword fighting was always going to be more his thing, he figured. But he enjoyed the company.
"You want to try again?" James asked.
"Rather eat lunch, honestly."
"Come on. I think Pauline had some stuff at home."
The two of them packed up their things and headed over the hill towards Pauline's place. They passed through the gate and into town. The town hadn't changed much since Notch had been here the first time, back when he’d been trying to find out more about Herobrine. James and Pauline had returned and Notch had decided to visit. He had just come back from seeing Wallace, who was finishing up work on the book about Herobrine.
"Did you hear me?"
"No, sorry," Notch said, turning his head, "Deaf in one ear, remember." One too many explosions due to Herobrine had made Notch lose hearing for good in one ear.
"How was Wallace's book?"
"It was good," Notch replied as they walked to Pauline's house, "Strange reading it, though, after living it."
James nodded, "I can imagine."
Notch fell into silence, thinking about Herobrine the rest of the way to Pauline's house. She had moved back to become the town's doctor again. They walked through the front door to see that Pauline was examining a creeper head.
"Lovely." James said, startling her.
"Geez, James, don't just burst in here like that," she said to him, running her fingers through her hair.
"Sorry." Notch apologized.
They mentioned they were there for lunch and Pauline took them to the back, where her living quarters were. They sat down to eat bread, grilled pork chop, and mushroom soup with fresh milk to drink. It was delicious, and James and Notch were silent as they ate hungrily.
"How was training?" Pauline asked as she took a bite of a pork chop.
"Notch should stick with swords."
"Hey," Notch protested, "I'm really not that bad."
Pauline smiled, but Notch noticed it looked strained. "I'm glad you're learning." She said.
"What's wrong with you?" Notch asked her.
She looked startled. "Nothing."
"Really? Because you don't look like nothing is wrong."
James was bouncing between looking at Notch and then Pauline, "Something is wrong with Pauline?"
Pauline wiped her mouth with a napkin and then glanced outside the window. "I'm glad you came, Notch, because I have to talk to you."
"That doesn't sound good."
Pauline shifted in her seat. "There’s a small village by the ocean that has reported some strange activity."
"Strange, how so?" Notch asked.
"Increased spider activity, for one. And ghost sightings."
Silence filled the room.
Notch finally spoke. "Do you think this is enough to warrant concern?"
Pauline paused and then nodded, "I do."
"Then I'll go tomorrow."
"Wait, wait!" James said, standing up, "If this is...you know...then I'm going, too."
"Me as well."
Notch looked at both of them, "Are you sure?"
They both nodded.
"We'll leave in the morning, then." Notch said.
That night, he found himself staring up at the ceiling of the inn. It was the same room that he had last time. He remembered how Herobrine had made him think lava was filling the room and how terrified he had been. There was no way that Herobrine could be back. Notch had thrown the sword with Herobrine's spirit in the lava himself. He had watched it burn up and melt.
Maybe it wasn't truly him, Notch tried to tell himself; maybe it was just people who were freaked out by spiders and thought they were seeing something that looked like a ghost. He hoped that the three of them would go to the village by the ocean and find nothing wrong. The other possibility was more than Notch could bear to think of.
